MULTI-AGENT SOFTWARE SYSTEMS

Intelligent Software Systems

The application of software agent technology to the development of new services with significant customization features in heterogeneous distributed environments such as the Internet has attracted the attention of many researchers in the field of information and communications technologies. The reasons for this fact can be explained from two perspectives. First, from a modeling perspective (that is, considering the effort required to build a computational model that represents the real world), due to the ability of multi-agent systems (MAS) to represent the relationships and roles that exist in systems with complex social relationships, such as those found in an electronic marketplace or in the business processes of a company or institution. On the other hand, from a systems engineering point of view, the characteristics of distribution, communication, modularity and intelligence in the agents allow to improve aspects of flexibility (the functionality can be increased by introducing new types of agents in the system that provide new services), scalability (simply adding new computational resources in the network, where the agents can work), and robustness (agents can be defined that monitor the operation of the system, and failures in the system can be repaired by reorganizing the agents and their distribution).
